WOMS Opens May 10th at Kalamazoo Speedway
The much anticipated opener for the Wolverine Outlaw Midget Series is approaching fast. The May 10th opener at the 3/8th mile Kalamazoo Speedway should be a great opening night for WOMS. Our veterans from last year will be challenged by a strong contingent of new cars. Expected to compete will be the always fast Pat Wilda and USAC regulars Ricky Ehrgott, David Byrne and Brian Olson.

WOMS regulars Toby Alfrey, Matt Maners, Doug Dietsch, Aaron Shroad, Dave Troyer,Chad Atkinson, Chris O'Connell and Bobby Jackson should offer some stiff competition. There is also the graybeard contingent of Phil Rutledge, Dick Osborn, Dan VanderMolen  and Ed Wasserman who on any given day can surprise their younger counterparts.. We will also have a pair of women drivers that have the talent and the skill to challenge, Haley Barnett and rookie Kim Hughes.

This list does not include the unknowns  that have yet to indicate they might be racing with WOMS at Kalamazoo. We will post an updated roster next week. It looks to be a full field of cars for the opener. Here's hoping the weather cooperates.

Opener Less then 4 Weeks Away
Kalamazoo Speedway will host our opening event on May 10th. Please get your driver applications and registrations in for the first race. Remember registrations must be postmarked no later then the Monday before an event to get championship points for pre-registration. Pre- registration must include the fee of $25. If you register at the track the fee is $35 for everyone. Drivers please complete a driver profile on line if you have not done so or update your current profile. We need driver applications as soon as possible to turn in to our insurance carrier. Please do not wait till the last minute. Remember our test and tune session is fast approaching on April 26th , less then two weeks away at Springport Motor Speedway.

I will be posting the pay out for each race at least one week prior to the event as it will vary at times. The pay out will be much improved over last year thanks to our new title sponsor Arvron Inc. and our three associate sponsors Corrigan Oil, Van's Pattern and Mercantile Bank of Michigan. Currently we are experiencing some problems on our member's page but it should be fixed this week.

WOMS 2008 Championship Wide Open
The 2008 Wolverine Outlaw Midget Series championship should be a wide open affair. As of this writing we are not sure whether our 2007 champion, Chris Hettinger, will be returning to defend his title. Either way , a stout group of contenders have set their sights on winning the 2008 championship.
All those finishing in the top five will be back. This includes Aaron Shroad, Phil Rutledge, Dan Vander Molen and Dave Troyer. Along with this group of returnees will be some notable part timers from last year that have set their sights on a full season run at the 2008 championship. First among these is Toby Alfrey. Competitive at every race he ran last year, he looks to be a real threat this year. The same can be said of Matt Maners. Ed Wasserman has made a major upgrade in equipment and should be much faster this year. Chad Atkinson and Dick Osborn had up and down seasons last year but look to be improved for this year.

Two newcomers to our series full time but with a lot of experience our Tom
Fedorczyk and Dereck Bischik. Tom has driven sprints and midgets for many years and should be very competitive right out of the box. Dereck has run a few races with us and has always been fast. He recently did  an outstanding job at the just completed Rumble, almost winning the whole thing.

We will have at least two female drivers in the coming season. Haley Barnett after taking a year off will be returning, looking to add to her victory total and Kim Hughes a rookie coming out of mini sprints but with a lot of racing experience will try her hand at midgets.

Last but not least several veterans will be returning hoping to forget the bad luck that plagued them last season. Doug Dietsch will be returning with an upgrade in equipment that should propel him into the top five on a regular basis. Chris O'Connell and Bobby Jackson  hopefully have conquered their engine problems and should be much improved.

This is just a short list of some of the young guns and old timers expected to challenge for the 2008 championship .We have had many inquiries about joining our series so maybe our new champion may be none of the above. It should be an exciting year
. WOMS Releases 2008 Tentative Schedule
The Wolverine Outlaw Midget Series has released it's 2008 tentative schedule. Our series will be racing at some of the top short tracks in the Midwest. We will be racing two new tracks this year, Angola and Auto City. Along with those top tracks we will be visiting Kalamazoo and Berlin twice along with Angola. There will be single visits to Spartan, Springport and Auto City Speedway. This is only a tentative schedule and other dates are still being considered, especially early in the season. I am very confident an additional date will be added in late May or early June. This only represents WOMS hosted events and does not yet include additional co-sanctioned events that will be added.

May  10    Kalamazoo
June  21   Berlin
July  5   Angola
July  26  Kalamazoo
August 16  Springport
August 29  Spartan
August 31  Angola
September  20  Auto City
September  27  Berlin

Congratulations !!!
In the recently concluded Rumble in Fort Wayne, two of our very own did an outstanding job. Dereck Bischak and Gary Barnett teamed up for two fourth place finishes against some great national talent and nearly won one of the A main features. Great job!!

The Race Depot on board for 2008
The Wolverine Outlaw Midget series  announced today that The Race Depot will come aboard as a sponsor for 2008. At each WOMS hosted event two gift certificates will be awarded to The Race Depot. Almost all your midget racing needs can be provided at The Racing Depot. Check out their web site at http://www.theracedepot.com. We welcome their participation with The Wolverine Outlaw Midget Series.

WOMS Sponsors Mini-Sprint Series

The Wolverine Outlaw Midget Series has announced today that they will partner with Jackson Speedway to sponsor a pavement mini-sprint series for 2008. Although the details have not been finalized, an agreement has been reached in principle.  Jackson Speedway hosts three different racing venues, a paved road course, a 1/6 mile dirt oval and a 1/5 mile paved oval. The drivers and owners of this new series will be invited to attend the 2008 WOMS banquet where their point leaders will be appropriately recognized. It is hoped this partnership will allow
drivers and owners looking to move up to a full midget a more direct  avenue to make that transition. We welcome the mini-sprint drivers and owners to the WOMS

The midgets will be joined by the Auto Value Super Sprints and the Isma Super Modifieds. This should be a spectacular event. We are expecting 24 to 30 midgets for this event. All three series will crown their champions on that night.

Berlin Final 9/29 Open Wheel Special

Our final event of 2007  is an open wheel tri-sanctioned event at Berlin Raceway on 9/29.It should be an exciting event with UMARA & USAC joining WOMS for this season ending special. Joining the midgets will be the Auto Value Super Sprints and the ISMA Super Modifieds. This will be our last points event of the season with current leader Chris Hettinger holding an overwhelming lead for the championship. The next four positions are still hotly contested and will be decided at this final event. More details to follow.

Banquet 11/3 Schuler's Restaurant Marshall, Michigan
The Wolverine Outlaw Midget Series will hold it's annual banquet at Schuler's Restaurant in Marshall Michigan on November 3rd. WOMS 8/11 Olson Wins

A spirited battle between the top four cars for much of the race ended with Brian Olson pulling away at the flag for his first WOMS victory of the season.  Olson, Chris Hettinger, Tobey Alfrey and AJ lane for much of the race put on an exciting show as they battled for position. The race changed on lap 22 as Hettinger got caught in the spin of a lapped car while chasing Olson. On the
restart Olson pulled away for the win. Olson was followed  across the line by Lane, Alfrey, Aaron Shroad, Dave Troyer and Dick Osborn. Heat race winners were Alfrey and Lane. Hard Charger was Shroad.  View Results

Hettinger Seeks Fifth Win At Berlin
Chris Hettinger is having a WOMS season to remember. After ripping off three straight wins, he was knocked out of the winners circle by Tobey Alfrey in the fourth race of the season. Hettinger regrouped and came back last week at Spartan to notch his fourth win of the season. This Saturday at Berlin his competition will try to put an end to his winning ways. Tobey Alfrey, Phil Rutledge, Ricky Ehrgott, Chad Goff and others will be gunning for a win on the historic 1/2 mile. With $1000 to win and $200 to start there may be others willing to take a shot at slowing his record pace. Be at Berlin on Saturday 8/11 to find out.

Hettinger Wins Fourth !

Chris Hettinger returned to his winning ways on Sunday at Spartan Speedway. After being nipped at the line at the previous event at Springport, he made short work of the field at Spartan to cruise to his fourth victory of the season. Chris was followed to the line by Phil Rutledge who is quietly putting together one of his best seasons. The top five was rounded out by Dereck Snyder, Chad Atkinson and Ed Wasserman. Heat race winners were Rutledge and Hettinger. Hettinger had fast time. Hard Charger was Gavin Hunyady.

Wow , Alfrey by a nose!!
I
n a bid to win four in a row Chris Hettinger  came up six inches short at Springport last night. Tobey Alfrey got the early lead and was able to hang on for a .029 second victory in one of the closest finishes in WOMS history. Alfrey pocketed the extra $100 offered to anyone breaking Hettinger's win streak. Following Alfrey and Hettinger across the finish line were Rickey Ehrgott, Matt Maners, Phil Rutledge, Doug Dietsch and Dan Vander Molen. Fast time was recorded by Ehrgott. Heat race winners were Alfrey and Ehrgott. Dan Vander Molen was hard charger.

Corson Memorial 9/16
Our next race is the Corson Memorial at Grundy Speedway in Morris Illinois. This is a non-points race that we are co-sanctioning with the Illini Racing Series. As was decided at our meeting before the season started we are not awarding points for our co-sanctioned races. We do, however, encourage teams to participate in the co-sanctioned races if possible and we take pride when one of our own does well, such as Chris's 3rd at the USAC event recently. I have decided to pay any WOMS team that participates in this event $50 tow money because of the amount of travel involved. We are there to celebrate the life of Bob Corson and recognize his considerable contributions to the world of midget racing. I hope to see some of you down there.

Corson Memorial 9/16  Gates open at 10:30
Hot laps begin at 12:00
Racing Starts at 3:00 Sharp
We should be leaving by 7:30
One other note, Brian Olson has returned home from the hospital and is doing well, all things considered.

Brian Olson Hospitalized
Brian Olson, the most recent winner in our series, was injured in a horrific crash at Grundy County Speedway this weekend. Apparently his throttle stuck and he slammed into the 1st turn wall at full speed. Brian was taken to the local hospital and although his injuries were not life threatening they were substantial. He has a severely broken arm, bruised lung and fractured pelvis. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Brian for a speedy recovery.

Wow , Alfrey by a nose!!

Hettinger Bounty at Springport !!

So far Chris Hettinger can't be beat. After ripping off three straight victories to start the season he looks to be almost unbeatable this year. To up the stakes for our next race, WOMS will pay a bonus of $100 to anyone winning the feature and beating Chris. To be eligible for the bonus, Chris must also finish the feature.  If Hettinger were to win at Springport the bonus would rise for the following race and continue until either the streak is broken or he closes out the season undefeated. That would be an awesome accomplishment. Our purse for Springport is  posted on the WOMS member's page.

Hettinger Wins Again !

Chris Hettinger won his third feature of the season over a depleted field of WOMS midgets at Springport Motor Speedway. An unusual amount of early season engine failures produced a reduced field for this event. Chris by no means had an easy time of it as he was challenged hard by Dereck Bischik, Chad Atkinson and Phil Rutledge. Bischik actually was leading the field after getting by Hettinger earlier in the race when Hettinger became loose. With three to go Bischik lost his brakes. On the restart Atkinson and Rutledge hung tough but were not able to gain on Hettinger as his car was just to strong. Hettinger was followed across the line by Atkinson, Rutledge, Arron Shroad and Ed Wasserman. The Wolverine Outlaw Midget Series will be back in action on July 21 as we  return to Springport.

Hettinger Repeat Winner !
On a hot and muggy night at M40 no one was hotter then Chris Hettinger. Seventeen midgets were present for the open wheel special at M40 but only fifteen were able to take the green flag  for the feature in front of a huge crowd . Qualifying was a good indicator of things to come. Matt Maners  ripped off a great lap of 12.7 on the 3/8 mile track and seemed to be the man to beat but then Hettinger ripped off an unbelievable lap of 12.4 from the final qualifying position. Dave Fuhrman and Phil Rutledge led the field to the green. Rutledge led the first four laps but on the fifth lap Hettinger had already caught Rutledge for the lead. Hettinger led followed by Rutledge, Chris O'Connell, Maners, Gary Harrell and Fuhrman. It was evident that  Harrell, Maners and  Hettinger were the class of the field. Starting from the sixth, seventh and eight starting positions they were  quickly moving to the front. By lap fifteen  it was Hettinger, Maner, Harrell, Rutledge, O'Connell and Dave Troyer.
On this night no one was going to deny Hettinger as he cruised to victory over Maners and Harrell. The heat winners were Maners and Rutledge. Hard charger goes to Phil Shroad. WOMS will be at Springport next Saturday.

Hettinger Wins Season Opener at Kalamazoo (Kalamazoo, MI)

It was an exciting start to the WOMS season as 19 cars showed up with hopes of a feature win.  Unfortunately, 2 cars would not even get to qualify due to engine and electrical issues.  As for the rest, they had their sights set on the feature event…and at the end of the night, it was Chris Hettinger going home as feature winner.

Chad Atkinson and Doug Dietsch brought the field to the green flag to start the 25 lap main event.  It wasn’t long before the fast qualifier, Chris Randolph, assumed the number 1 position on lap 7, taking over the front spot from Gary Harrell.  He wasn’t making his way to the front unaccompanied though.  Chris Hettinger was right behind him taking over the second spot from Harrell on lap 8.  Randolph and Hettinger battled for a while until the first caution of the night came out on lap 14 when the 0 car of Dietsch spun.  After the restart, the two got back at it again and this time they weren’t alone.  Pat Wilda, Gary Harrell, Chad Goff, and Matt Maners were all right there behind them waiting for a mistake to be made.  On lap 19, they had their chance.  Randolph and Hettinger came up on some lap traffic and the two split the traffic going into turn 2.  When they cleared the traffic in turn 3, the two got together and spun each other out.  Both restarted, but it was now Wilda assuming the front position.  Only 2 laps later, the caution flag flew again as the 11 spun.  But before they could complete a lap during the restart, Harrell and Randolph who were fighting for the 4th position, spun each other out between turns 3 and 4 and the second place sitter, Chad Goff pulled in with vehicle issues.  Harrell and Randolph both restarted but on the second restart of lap 21, it was Hettinger who took the lead from Matt Maners and never looked back.

Heat #1 was won by Matt Maners followed by Gary Harrell, Chris Randolph, Doug Dietch, Chad Atkinson, Aaron Shroad, Dan VanderMolen, Zach Furhman, and Derek Snyder.  Heat #2 was won by Pat Wilda followed by Chris Hettinger, Chad Goff, Phil Rutledge, David Troyer, Chris Laarman, Dick Osborn, and Dave Furhman.  View Results

Racing Community Mourns
What can only be described as a terrible weekend for Michigan racing, we loss two very popular drivers in separate incidents. Stan Perry on Friday at Spartan and Scott Seaton on Saturday at Auto City both succumbed to injuries they received in accidents. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families during this terrible time of grief.

WOMS 2007 Schedule

The Wolverine Outlaw Midget Series has completed its 2007 schedule. The series will be visiting some of the premiere tracks in the Midwest. There will be multiple stops at Berlin Raceway of Grand Rapids, Spartan Speedway of Lansing and Springport Speedway of Springport. There will also be single visits to M40 Speedway and Kalamazoo Speedway. We feel fortunate to have booked all of these outstanding tracks. We will be sharing the stage with the AutoValue Super Sprints on two occasions and with the ISMA Super Modifieds on two occasions. We encourage all midget racers to scan the WOMS schedule and to participate in any or all of our 2007 events as their schedule allows. A twenty car field at the M40 and two Berlin events would ensure a payout of $700 to win and $160 to start. At Spartan, a field of eighteen cars or more will ensure a payout of of over $600 to win and $160 to start. As we continue to grow our series we welcome and encourage participation by everyone from sportsman to regional hotshot.

Steve Paul has again generously offered to return as race day director again this year. We are fortunate to have a race day official with the knowledge and experience Steve has acquired over the years. Steve is respected by the drivers even though he is often asked to make difficult decisions.

Series Advisor
Chris Hettinger has agreed to help our series as a series advisor. I will be relying on Chris not only for his knowledge of midget racing but also for his special knowledge of our series. Chris is widely recognized as a talented owner and driver.

WOWMS is now WOMS
The Wolverine Midget Series will be taking off the wings this year and will become the Wolverine Outlaw Midget Series. We are a mid-Michigan based series and welcome any and all midgets to our series. We have taken off the wings to allow midgets considering our series to do so without purchasing a wing. Besides our Michigan base we also will run several co-sanctioned events with UMARA and USAC.
